Pediatric and Neonatal Echo :

Pediatric and Neonatal Echo :

An echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to create images of the heart. A Doppler test uses sound waves to measure the speed and direction of blood flow. By combining these tests, a pediatric cardiologist gets useful information about the heart’s anatomy and function. Echocardiography is the most common test used in children to diagnose or rule out heart disease and also to follow children who have already been diagnosed with a heart problem. This test can be performed on children of all ages and sizes including fetuses and newborns.

Echocardiography diagnoses cardiac problems, and also guides heart surgery and complex cardiac catheterizations.

Pediatric cardiac Consultation

Children with cardiac conditions require expert advise from Pediatric cardiologist , in order to plan the treatment( medical , catheter based intervention or surgical) and timing when to intervene .

Pediatric Cardiac Consultations

Pediatric Cardiac cases medicalmanagement:

There are numerous pediatric cardiac conditions which needs to medical managed , such as  Heart failure, Pulmonary Hypertension , Arrhythmias , Hypertension in children , Lipid disorders , and Infection of the heart (infective endocarditis)

Echocardiography diagnoses cardiac problems, and also guides heart surgery and complex cardiac catheterizations.

Foetal cardiology :

Today fetal cardiology is a subspecialty of pediatric cardiology , encompasses: a) the management of fetuses with CHD; b) fetal arrhythmias, and c) the exploration of fetal myocardial function and cardiocirculatory conditions in high-risk pregnancies. It also involves screening  of foetal heart at 18- 22 weeks of gestation in which detailed evaluation of the foetal heart is done studying its structure , function and electrical activity of the foetal heart.

Foetal cardiology

Foetal Arrhythmia management:

Many fetuses develop abnormal  electrical activity in utero leading to increases heart beat which need to be controlled by giving medications to the mother and in extreme cases directly to the foetus . In some cases there is reduced heart rate caused by heart block , this can also be controlled to some extent .

Echocardiography diagnoses cardiac problems, and also guides heart surgery and complex cardiac catheterizations.

Foetal Arrhythmia management

Foetal cardiac Consultation:

Foetus with any abnormality in foetal heart whether structural, functional or abnormal electrical activity in form of tachyarrhythmia or bradyarrhythmia need to be consulted with Foetal Cardiologist who is trained in the management of these fetuses.

Pediatric and Neonatal EKG:

In order to rule out rhythm disorders in children EKG is required. To do EKG in children special leads are required and also interpretation different as compared to adults.

Pediatric Holter :

Is a specialized test in which rhythm of heart is recorded for 24 hour period and in some cases extended for 72 hours . This helps to pick up arrhythmia or asystole period which are missed on routine ECG. This test is also quiet useful during the evaluation of syncope .

Pediatric cardiac Interventions :

In todays era large number of congenital heart defects can be corrected non surgically with catheter based interventions . Defects such as ASD , PDA , VSD , Balloon dilation of stenotic valves , stenting of narrow vessels and some cases its apart of hybrid procedures ( one part is done by intervention and other is done surgically) are treated non surgically by using devices or stents .
